So, in my typical fashion, I didn't get hiking on the trail until noon-it starts about 65 miles SE of San Diego just south of the town of Campo where the Border Patrol and a sheriff's youth ranch are the biggests entity's.
Hiked up through the middle of the Hauser Wilderness--but only got 14 miles before I was toast...I thought I was further along when I called a few people--good cell reception(it's a small wilderness area). Still, I can't really hear sounds of civilization...the occasional semi faintly in the distance using it's exhaust brakes to retard the engine going down one of the passes. Lots of birds here up in the chapparal. Gorgeous views.
I am definitely paying the price for a heavy (by thru hiker standards) pack. 37-40# before water....yep it's a fifty pounder--gotta do something about that...maybe ditch the 'Backpacker', 'Economist', and 'Outside' for starters :-) lol. Ate the lasagna with meat tonight. Tasty! Night is setting in, so I'd better go get some rest--oh, the fragrant scents of Spring here are wonderful. Lots of wildflowers. Ok, more later when I can get to a real keyboard.
Here are a few pics I took with just my camera phone--other pics will have to wait.
It's another new day tomorrow! Woo Hoo! (we'll see if I'm as excited when I'm sore as all get out).
Saw three hummingbirds, two hawks, and a bunch of buzzards today.
Alright--good night.
:-)
